The hidden chameleons of eastern Madagascar: a new video from the CCC
A new video focusing on the chameleon survey programme in the rainforests of eastern Madagascar is now available on the Caméléon Centre Conservation’s YouTube channel.
Through these images, we take you to the heart of Vohimana, Iaroka and Maromizaha, three forest massifs located in the Ankeniheny-Zahamena Corridor (CAZ), a region renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and its wealth of chameleon species.
In the field, CCC teams work alongside student researchers, site managers and local communities to document the diversity and distribution of the species present. Surveys are carried out both day and night and enable a wide range of information to be collected: GPS coordinates of sightings, standardised photographs, habitat characteristics and environmental data.
Since the launch of this programme, more than 2,000 chameleon sightings have already been recorded across the various study sites. This data forms an essential basis for better understanding the ecology of these species, monitoring changes in their populations and identifying habitats that are particularly important for their conservation.
But these surveys go far beyond simply searching for species. They form part of a long-term approach combining scientific research, local training and habitat conservation. By gradually improving our knowledge of chameleons and the forests on which they depend, we can better guide future conservation efforts and strengthen collaboration between the various stakeholders involved in protecting these ecosystems.
This new video offers a practical insight into the work carried out in the field and the people who contribute, day in, day out, to expanding this knowledge.
