Inventory of chameleons and other reptiles in Makay, Madagascar
Collect data to strengthen conservation strategies, support research and promote a participatory science approach

Project summary
The project Inventory of chameleons and other reptiles in Makay, organised jointly by our association and Naturevolution, aims to deepen our knowledge of the populations of chameleons and other reptiles present in the Makay massif. This 4,000 km² massif, located in the southwest of Madagascar, is made up of a labyrinth of forest canyons and is home to a veritable treasure trove of biodiversity.
Objectives of the chameleon project

-
To make an inventory of the chameleon species present in the Makay massif. Previous research has identified five species in this region, including Furcifer nicosiai, classified as endangered (EN) by the IUCN and considered a priority for our conservation actions, as well as four species classified as of least concern (LC): Brookesia brygooi, Furcifer oustaleti, Furcifer verrucosus and Furcifer viridis.
-
Assess the conservation status of these species by collecting data on their distribution, abundance and the potential threats they face.
-
Propose appropriate conservation measures. Based on the data collected, we will develop strategies to protect these species and their habitats.
Collaboration avec Naturevolution
The collaboration between Caméléon Center Conservation and Naturevolution is essential for the success of this project. Naturevolution, active in the Makay massif since 2009, has conducted several biodiversity exploration and inventory missions. Their expertise and knowledge of the field are major assets for our joint project.
By combining our skills and resources, we are strengthening our ability to conduct in-depth research and implement effective conservation measures.
Take part in the project
We invite anyone interested in reptile conservation, and chameleons in particular, to join this project as eco-volunteers. Your participation will directly contribute to the collection of essential data for the protection of these species.
For more information on the project and how to participate, we encourage you to visit the dedicated page on the Naturevolution website. Together, let's work to preserve the chameleons and the rich biodiversity of the Makay massif.
