The study and conservation project for the common chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleon) led by Caméléon Center Conservation and Fauna Morocco in Morocco is entering a new phase. Following an initial mission dedicated to documenting threats and establishing the scientific framework for the project, the second field mission will begin this week, between late December and early January.
Mission 1 report now available
The full report on the first mission is now available. It presents the initial objectives of the project, the areas surveyed, initial field observations and a detailed analysis of the threats to chameleon populations in Morocco (anthropogenic pressures, habitat degradation, cultural practices, etc.). This document provides a basis for the rest of the project, both scientifically and in terms of the transparency of our actions.
The report is available for download.
Mission 2: a key phase of training and calibration
Mission 2 begins this week and is part of a progressive methodological approach. The main objectives of this phase are to:
take test samples from common chameleons for genetic testing;
train and improve skills in the technique of sampling chameleons;
test and validate the logistical and administrative protocol for exporting samples;
identify environments favourable to the species in the study area.

The winter season is not ideal for observing the common chameleon, but this mission nevertheless plays an essential role in familiarising ourselves with the region of interest in northern Morocco, in order to effectively prepare for Mission 3, which will take place in the spring.
The challenge is therefore twofold: to test the protocols in real conditions and to define a methodology consistent with existing work, in order to ultimately target areas that have been little or not at all studied.
A new partner joins the project: ZooPark Zájezd
We are pleased to announce the arrival of a new institutional partner, ZooPark Zájezd, which is officially joining the project dedicated to the common chameleon in Morocco.
ZooPark Zájezd will provide direct support for the project and help strengthen the resources mobilised for field missions and scientific analysis phases. This partnership illustrates the importance of collaboration between conservation stakeholders, zoological institutions and research organisations in order to better understand and protect the species.
Supporting the rest of the project
The next missions, particularly the one planned for spring, will be crucial in furthering the study of common chameleon populations in Morocco and laying the foundations for targeted and effective conservation actions.
Everyone can contribute to this effort:
by consulting and sharing the mission report,
by relaying our actions and results,
or by financially supporting the project, in order to enable the continuation of field missions, scientific analyses and collaborative work with our local and institutional partners.
By supporting this project, you are directly contributing to the production of scientific knowledge, the preservation of an emblematic species and the implementation of conservation strategies based on robust data.
Thank you to all those who are accompanying us on this scientific and human adventure.
